An exhibition in Gallery I, July 7 – August 11, 2023
Reception/Meet the Artist: Saturday July 15, 2pm-4pm
From July 7 to August 11, Sivarulrasa Gallery is pleased to present CATHERINE GUTSCHE: NEWS BLUES, a solo exhibition of paintings and mixed media works by Ottawa-based artist Catherine Gutsche.
In this body of work, the artist draws on observations from life over the past four years, in particular, the pandemic. The title of the show “News Blues” derives from the feeling of watching from a distance as events passed by. “Participation not being a viable option, we sat back and absorbed events as they were presented from third parties,” she says. “This unwilling restriction forced me to rely on images and events that presented themselves in my local neighbourhood, the news, and my memory.”
Born and raised in Toronto, Catherine Gutsche earned her Bachelor of Fine Art degree at York University in 1980. She creates intricate non-representational compositions, often alluding to forms in nature but highly abstracted. As her paintings are largely process-driven, she uses a variety of tools in the studio, including brushes, palette knives, skewer sticks, tree branches, and even metal spikes to sometimes gouge the surface she is working on. Her works are held in many private collections in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Reception/Meet the Artist: Saturday July 15, 2pm-4pm. Artist Catherine Gutsche will be in attendance.
